Fundamental Health Care Practice
Area of study

The programme aims to prepare senior secondary school students to have local basic health sector knowledge for further study and career development. Students will learn basic nursing practices, basic life support skills and interpersonal skill in order to contribute to the health of individuals, families, communities and to the development of the profession.

 
Synopsis
This course aims at providing a basic knowledge of nursing and health care to students. Students are expected to acquire general knowledge in nursing and health care service which could be beneficial to their future study and career development
 
Rationale

Students gain a wider and deeper knowledge in respect of medical and health care. They may advance their competitiveness to be a profession.

Aims and objectives

(1) KNOWLEDGE - This course aims at providing a basic knowledge of nursing and health care to students. They will learn basic theories of health care, food and nutrition, first aids as well as practical skills. Upon completion of this course, students are expected to acquire general knowledge in nursing and health care service which could be beneficial to their future career development.

(2)SKILLS – Students will have ample structured practical training opportunities in basic health care, medical and first aids. This skills training practice will definitely consolidate the theories learnt in class. This valuable experience would prepare students who would like to join in the nursing and health care service in their future career.

(3)ATTITUDE – To help young people to have a healthy personal and social development. Young people should have good senses of perseverance, responsibilities, positive thinking, respecting for others and commitments. This course is not only to provide knowledge and skills training of the nursing and health care service to students but also to offer them a chance of self-understanding and learning the importance of their contribution to the society.

Students completing the Health Care Assistant Qualifying Course within two years can obtain the Health Care Assistant Training Certificate.

 
Curriculum organisation

Fundamental Health Care Practice is a comprehensive career-oriented course, specially designed for Form 4 and Form 5 students. There are 13 modules with a total of 180 teaching hours. This course would cover a wide range of topics in nursing, health care and first aids. Hospital visit and practical training will also be provided in this course. Students would have a better understanding of medical and health care service for future career planning upon completion of this course.

Part-time ; One day per week, Saturday 9: 00 am to 5: 00 pm and/or 9:00am to 1:00pm
Form 4 (1 st term) 60 hours ; (2nd term) 63 hours ; Form 5 (1 st term) 57 hours

Caritas Eastern District Community Education Center or School ( our center may arrange teachers to the school if there are twenty students or more joining the course)

Learning and teaching

Most of the topics would be focus on practical sessions in hospital, for example, hospital practicum. A combination of face-to-face teaching and independent studies and interactive activities are also provided. Small group tutorials for CPR Training, drug dispensing, role-plays on patient caring. Interpersonal skills, team spirit and empathy are the major soft skills to be taught in this course.

Assessment

Weighting for Written & Practical Examination (100% in total)

9 Written Assessments (9 assessments, equally weight & add up to a total of 60%,)
• Passing mark for written assessment : 50
• Each assessment will last for one hour

3 Practical Exams (3 exams, 20%, spread evenly)
• Practical exams: students will receive ‘Pass' or ‘Fail' grade only

Graduation Certificate will only be issued to students who have to pass all written and practical examinations.

Written re-assessment will be arranged at the end of each term for students who obtain 40 marks or above in each written assessment. Practical re-exams will be arranged immediately on the same day and venue of the exam respectively.

Train-the-trainers programme

To ensure and maintain the highest academic and professional quality of this program, all teaching staffs are registered medical professionals with sufficient teaching and working experience. Train-the-trainer programme could be offered after deliberate consultation with the medical professionals as well as course instructors. School teachers would become qualified trainers in partial curriculum such as communication skills and basic principals of first aids after completing a well-organized train-the-trainer programme.

 
Additional Information

To ensure the highest academic and professional quality of this program, our teaching staffs are registered medical professionals with sufficient teaching and working experience. Feedback from students plays an essential role of monitoring as well as improving the quality of the course offered. Students would be asked to complete a questionnaire on teaching content, teaching effectiveness and related support facilities at the end of each term. We also welcome comments from parents and schools. Class visit and staff meeting would be held on a regular basis. Comment and advice would also be collected from experienced professionals of the field for improvement of the course, facilities and support.
